A Tiny Authentical Wishing Song in the Thai-Chinese Buddhist Fest

Abstract

Thai-Chinese people who are faithful to Buddhism, closely tied to the Thai temple and always joined Thai-Chinese activities as the Songkran festival or Thai New Year Fest which the wishing song to understand more. An objective to expedition through wishing song and its cultural contexts. Research Method in Musicethnology with Grounded collecting, observation in singers' troop on 12-15 April 2025 at Wat Noi temple, Nakhonpathom Province, Thailand. Result, found Thai village area’s and temple historical evidence of the ordination's including silver and gold plates inscribed on an old pagoda built in A. D. 1799. Thai people around here, some moved from other places and some have been staying here long time ago. The Chinese people in China who lived along the Chinese coast had come to Siam-Thailand earlier by sea voyage as Ban Tha Chin, Ban Dumnern who mostly Teochew, Hokkien, Hainanese, Cantonese, Hakka. A. D. 1858 During the reign of King Rama IV hired Chinese people to dig the Chedi Bucha Canal, facilitating their stay in Thais such as the Manchu, Guangzhou people. Nowadays, sum of them always stay through wishing song troops here. On Songkran Day-Thai New Year ritual at temple where the wishing song is played only in the ordination infront of the Buddha image. It starts from April 13-16 every year to now, for anyone who volunteers to sing. Wishing song roles are 3 singer roles a) leader singer 2) chorus singers and 3) other audiences should to chorus too, it total 22 persons that consisting 4 Thai Buddhist singers and 4 Chinese Buddhist singers. Most of them all elderly more than 80 years old. Inside the ordination rite, firstly they pray respect homage infront the Buddha image. Wishing song’s principle method which up on Thai verse rhyme rules as leader singer have to sing 4 phrases (each 4-5 words in 1 phrase) on high contour melody and chorus singer repeats that verse only 2 phrases which low contour melody. The main theme of Pissathan song are flower names that the rhyme verse links to the preceding sound’s keyword of they wishes for future need. Then finishing, would go back to the temple’s pavilion to receive blessings from the monks as supremely auspicious for separate ways to their home. Conclusion, meaning of the wishing song came from the first word of singing as Pissathan Eey, a unique characteristic inwhich singing continuously 85 every year and valuable into an authentic interpretation of Thai-Chinese Buddhist fest.
