Recent Progress in Macro- and Micro-plastics Degradation

01About This Special Issue

Plastics are the most widely synthesized, used, and discarded material on earth. Plastics are a broad category of synthetic material made up of natural constituents like coal, crude oil, cellulose, salt, and natural gas through polymerization. It is expected that the global plastic market size reaches USD 750.1 billion by 2028 and is anticipated to inflate at a CAGR of 3.4% from 2021-2028. This huge production leads to its unpredictable disposal in a natural environment. Generally, the discarded plastic in the environment disintegrated into small plastic particles that have a varying size range. Based on the size, plastics can be categorized as mega-plastics (size > 1 m), macro-plastics (> 2.5 cm), meso-plastics (> 5 mm), micro-plastics (< 5 mm), and nano-plastics (< 1 µm). Recently, plastic waste and its degradation are gaining increasing attention throughout the world. Currently, there are different used methods for plastics degradation such as bio, advanced oxidation process, chemical, and mechanical method but still, these reported methods face many limitations like most of them require specific environmental conditions. Considering the current plastic waste and current degradation issues there is a need to further study the novel degradation method for macro and microplastics.
