Abstract: This descriptive study aimed to find out the preferred work values, environment, interactions, and activities of employees in a Maritime institution. A survey questionnaire was administered to a group of respondents composed of 146 faculty and non-teaching staff who represent the sample size from the total population of 231 employees. Results of the study showed evidence that the employees place the highest value on spirituality, mutual respect, reaching goals, open communication, strong support system, cohesiveness, effective leadership, transparency, and recognition, among others. As a whole, they respond most positively to a fast-paced, result-oriented, and organized work environment. Building from the findings gathered, the study recommends the alignment of the employees’ preferences with the institution’s core values and priorities. Since being recognized for their efforts and contribution is important to them, recognition must be given where and when it is deemed best. It is also recommended that more workshops must be held to provide the employees an opportunity to revisit their value system in relation to themselves and others in the organization. Priorities in relation to work must also be reassessed or redefined through these workshops.

Abstract: This paper will further discuss the need to incorporate creativity in university teaching practices based on playing as a didactic strategy. The above, by considering the challenges that when facing the post-conflict, higher education in Colombia is dealing with as mediated by the new technologies and the advances that the stimulation of creativity implies in the students of today. In this respect, this paper first details the impact the armed conflict has had in Colombian education and, later, elaborates on the relevance of bringing different teaching strategies associated with playing to help develop creativity and improve the teaching practices in higher education in Colombia.

Abstract: Entrepreneurial competencies are critical for entrepreneurial success. Despite a growing body of literature in the field of entrepreneurial competencies, there is still considerable uncertainty concerning entrepreneurial competencies of female entrepreneurs. The objective of the study is therefore to empirically analyze the entrepreneurial competencies of female entrepreneurs. Based on a study of 306 women entrepreneurs of Micro and Small Enterprises (200 women entrepreneurs from Germany and 106 women entrepreneurs from Ireland), this analysis finds that entrepreneurial competencies as a higher order latent construct have a major impact on entrepreneurial success. Entrepreneurial competencies of women entrepreneurs in Germany and Ireland can be operationalized by a set of six first-order factors, including functional task related managerial skills, entrepreneurial characteristic adaptations of self-efficacy and orientations of competition, risk-taking and innovation, and the founder and innovator identity. The theoretical construct of entrepreneurial performance, which consists of the dimensions of economic, individual and societal performance, is expanded with the dimensions of performance quality, customer satisfaction and productivity. The practical implication of the study is that not only task related skills, but also distal personality related characteristic adaptations and identity should be developed in entrepreneurial learning programs targeted at women entrepreneurs who start small businesses. Future studies need to isolate the influence of context from the identified competencies.

Abstract: Distance learning software is a ‘hungry’ type of software in terms of performance metrics and its requirements for handling different kinds of media effectively. Video-based applications in particular are considered to be an extremely demanding type of software. Although up to this point software designers have spent considerable time improving applications, they have neglected the effects which are due to the use of the various network protocols. This work attempts a critical view of transport layer protocols and their effects on distance learning applications. This study shows that the stream control transmission protocol provides many advantages – especially the multi-homing and multi-streaming features. This protocol is recommended for video-based applications and its usage will improve the quality of service of contemporary distance learning applications.
